To fit average sized head of 10 to 11 yrs [Teen:Adult].


Alt alternate, P purl, K knit, Rep repeat, St(s) stitch(es), Ws wrong side, Rs Right side, Patt pattern, Tog together and 0 0 stitches.


1 Set of 4mm Knitting Needles.

1 Set of 5mm Knitting Needles.

1 Ball of Sirdar Supersoft Aran 100g ball, Shade Sliver Grey 821 and

10g Oddment of same yarn in a Contrast shade for Edging, (Used Sirdar Supersoft Aran Shade Kingfisher 898).


Pattern Tension- 17sts by 26 rows by 10cm to 10cm, (4in).

Stocking Stitch Tension- 18sts by 24 rows to 10cm, (4in).

Rib Tension 20sts by 24 rows to 10cm, (4in).


Using 4mm needles and thumb method cast on 82 [94:102] sts.

1st Row. * P2, k2, rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

2nd Row. * K2, p2, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.

These 2 rows will now be referred to as 2×2 rib.

Work in 2×2 rib for 8 [10:10]cm, (3¼ [4:4]in), ending with a 1st row.

Next Row. P4 [1:5], p2tog, (p7, p2tog) 8 [10:10] times, p4 [1:5] . 73 [83:91] sts.

Change to 5mm needles and proceed as follows:-

1st Row. Knit.

2nd Row. Purl.

These 2 rows will now be referred to as st-st (stocking stitch).

Work 4 rows more in st-st.

Proceed as follows:-

1st Row. K1 * p1, k1, rep from * to end.

2nd Row. K1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 2 times more.

7th Row. Knit.

8th Row. Purl.

The last 8 rows set patt.

Working in patt as set continue until hat measures 18 [20:20]cm, (7 [8:8]in), ending with ws [rs:ws] row.

For 2nd size only

Next Row. Patt [1], patt2tog, (patt [3], patt2tog) [24] times, patt [2]. [79] sts.

For all 3 sizes

Crown Shaping

1st Row. K1, (k2tog, k4) 12 [13:15] times. 61 [66:76] sts.

2nd every alt Row. Purl.

3rd Row. K1, (k2tog, k3) 12 [13:15] times. 49 [53:61] sts.

5th Row. K1, (k2tog, k2) 12 [13:15] times. 37 [40:46] sts.

7th Row. K1, (k2tog, k1) 12 [13:15] times. 25 [27:31] sts.

9th Row. K1, (k2tog)12 [13:15] times. 13 [14:16] sts.

10th Row. K1 [0:0], (k2tog) 6 [7:8] times. 7 [7:8] sts.

Break off yarn and thread yarn through remaining 7 [7:8] sts, draw up tightly and fasten. off. Leaving enough yarn for sewing up.

EDGING- With ws facing, using a 4mm needle and Contrast yarn pick up and knit 71 [79:87] sts evenly along cast on edge.

Next Row. Knit.

Next Row. Cast off 3 sts, * slip st back onto left hand needle and knit into st 3 times, cast off 3 sts, rep from * to end. Fasten off.

SEWING UP- Using the length of yarn at center of hat, sew down side seam reversing sewing for the last 4 [5:5]cm, (1½ [2:2]in).
